What OpenClaw actually is
OpenClaw is an agent gateway framework: model routing, tool execution, channels, and extension points for developers who want to run agents on their own infrastructure. CloudAxis Labs maintains OpenClaw as an optional submodule in our repo and can wire it into the hosted product — it is not a separate competitor we pretend to dislike.
If you are a builder comfortable with servers, env vars, and gateway ops, self-hosted OpenClaw can be the right layer. If you are a business operator who wants specialists on a schedule with a visible desktop, you are shopping a different layer entirely.
Three layers buyers confuse
| Layer | Example | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway / framework | Self-hosted OpenClaw | Teams who own infra and want maximum control |
| Workforce SaaS | Relevance AI | Template agents + marketplace integrations, fast deploy |
| Hosted Agent OS | CloudAxis | Persistent desktop, browser, cron, caps — managed for you |
For a full Relevance vs CloudAxis breakdown, see CloudAxis vs Relevance AI: Agent OS Compared. For architecture detail, see our repo layout and internal OpenClaw submodule docs.
When self-hosted OpenClaw fits
- You have DevOps capacity and want the gateway on your network.
- You will build custom tools and channels on top of the framework.
- You do not need a productized cloud desktop or browser for end users.
When CloudAxis (hosted OS) fits
- You want scheduled specialists, a real cloud browser, and persistent files without running gateway infrastructure.
- Hard monthly caps and hosted models matter more than root access to the gateway.
- You may still benefit from OpenClaw under the hood — but you should not have to operate it.
When Relevance-style workforce tools fit
- You want template roles and integration marketplace breadth out of the box.
- Your workflow is chain-centric, not desktop-centric.
FAQ
Is CloudAxis trying to replace OpenClaw?
No. CloudAxis is a hosted Agent OS product. OpenClaw is infrastructure we integrate with. Many “alternatives” lists mix framework, SaaS, and OS — this guide separates those layers.
Can I use OpenClaw and CloudAxis together?
CloudAxis can run with OpenClaw gateway integration in production setups. Buyers who only want self-hosting should evaluate OpenClaw directly; buyers who want the full OS should start at app.cloudaxis.ai.
